Every cowboy's day starts early and ends only when all his work is done. As this cowhand herds his cattle, he looks forward to returning to the warmth of home.
Although he began painting with watercolors, Montana artist Chris Owen moved to oils on canvas as his preferred medium. His work is active and fluid and filled with soft transitions in color and value. In this piece, it is valuable to note the movement of the cattle and rider through the light-filled dust. The sense of the movement of the herd through the swirling dust is really amazing. His technique of utilizing subtle glazing to create suggestions of different planes in the painting is masterful.
