"For my big paintings, I often make studies. In the wolf piece, 'Miles To Go' I wanted a black wolf, which I had never painted before. So before getting into the colours, I did several pencil sketches in different positions to study the expression of the black wolf. This one looked quite good and I could not resist the temptation to make it into a very detailed pencil drawing.

 

"The colour of wolves' fur can vary from very light to black within the same pack. Black wolves ordinarily never appealed to me very much, until I did this drawing and discovered that they can look very 'wolfish'." - Carl Brenders from his new book "Pride of Place" (2007).
