Before the darkness falls, a final glimpse of day's light lingers on the nearby mountains. On the windowsill, a candle casts a gentle glow upon a collection of treasures found in field and forest and the reflection of its flames beams from the windowpane. As snow gently begins to fall, Evening Light holds the promise of a peaceful night in the wilderness.
"I don't normally paint interiors," Stephen was quoted in his book Into the Wilderness, "but by doing a still life from inside a cabin, looking out through the window, I was able to get a different take on the wilderness experience. The candlelight serves the same function as a campfire, giving a warm glow to the scene."
